What we cover
Electrical Services in Cambridge
Cambridge’s older housing stock presents the full spectrum of electrical challenges — knob-and-tube wiring in pre-war buildings, undersized 60-amp services in post-war homes, and the growing demand for EV charger installations across the city. Cambridge Inspectional Services enforces strict permit requirements for electrical work. Our MA-licensed electricians handle everything from historic rewiring to modern EV infrastructure.

What Cambridge Homeowners Need to Know
Knob-and-Tube Wiring Is Widespread in Cambridge’s Pre-War Buildings
Cambridge has an enormous stock of housing built between 1880 and 1940, and a significant proportion still has original knob-and-tube wiring. Massachusetts insurers increasingly refuse coverage or charge significant surcharges for homes with active knob-and-tube. Cambridge Inspectional Services will not permit insulation work in walls or attics with active knob-and-tube. If you’re buying a pre-1940 Cambridge home, an electrical inspection is essential before closing.
Multi-Unit Buildings Have Complex Electrical Requirements
Cambridge’s triple-deckers and multi-family buildings have shared electrical infrastructure — common area panels, shared service entrances, and inter-unit wiring. Work on shared systems requires coordination with other units and Cambridge Inspectional Services permits. All electricians in our network have confirmed experience with Cambridge’s multi-family electrical work.
